The Greek Canadian History Project

Mission Statement

The Greek Canadian History Project (GCHP) is an initiative designed and committed to identifying, acquiring, digitizing, preserving, and providing access to primary source materials which reflect the experiences of Canada’s Greek immigrants and their descendants. The collected sources, currently in the hands of private individuals and organizations in the Greek-Canadian community, will be placed in the care of the Clara Thomas Archives & Special Collections of York University Libraries. The Project’s stewards are Dr. Athanasios (Sakis) Gekas, HHF Chair in Modern Greek History at York University, and Christopher Grafos, Ph.D. Candidate in History, York University.

The GCHP plans to be a continued repository for information, accessible for current and future research in broad thematic fields such as social, cultural, and economic practices of Greeks in Canada. We invite individuals to contribute collections of papers, diaries, photographs, books, pamphlets, audio, video, and other materials that will be valuable for research of the Greek-Canadian past. Our goal is to promote the value of personal collections which are often perceived to have little value beyond the life of an individual. The Project will serve to accentuate the value of ‘ordinary’ Greek-Canadians and the importance of preserving their memory.

The Project also seeks to establish partnerships with Greek-Canadian community organizations and individuals who wish to contribute materials to the Project. Objects like yearbooks, meeting minutes, mission statements as well as privately-held collections of community leaders will help to preserve the institutional and associational history of Greeks in Canada (continued, http://archives.library.yorku.ca/gchp/)http://archives.library.yorku.ca/gchp/)

The Rise of Greek Yogurt in the U.S.

I came across this billboard advertisement in Portland, OR, but it was removed before I could snap a picture. Luckily it has been documented here, http://aflamuuuuusic.blogspot.com/2011/06/trio-day-ben-jerry-ice-cream-billboards.html
For yet another version (featuring the obligatory classical imagery see, http://www.flickr.com/photos/target_man_2000/7216608238/)

Greek yogurt is everywhere in the US now, its cultural and economic history in Greek America begging for an article or a dissertation

Generating Interest in Greek America

Interview in GreekNews Online:

GN: You began your Keynote with the assessment that what drove the conference was “renewed academic interest in Americans of European origins”. What brought about this “renewed interest”?

YA: Researchers noted the psychological and social relevance of ethnicity in the lives of these individuals as “the need to belong” and to provide roots in order to combat alienation, but the depth and range of this identification were not adequately recognized, at least for some American ethnics. Neither was the role of communities in the formation of ethnic identities adequately recognized.

GN: What are some of the ways in which ethnicity is expressed?

YA: A dilemma for families these days is whether to catch an Italian or Greek American festival for the weekend! Cultural expressions of ethnicity proliferate: a blockbuster film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, for example, makes ethnicity a desirable form of belonging. Artists explore heritage, and publishers find value in ethnic family and community history. Writers and poets turn to ethnic experience as a source of inspiration, and ethnic autobiography flourishes…nowadays even young people write memoirs about “growing up ethnic”. Diaspora has become a buzzword; even the U.S. government endorses it.
